pH And Water

Water, an essential element of life, contains a number of dissolved salts, impurities and minerals. The water that we receive has four properties which are pH, buffering capacity, salinity and general hardness. Among these four properties, pH level in water is of great importance. Danish chemist, S.P.L Sorensen, was the first person to introduce the concept of pH scale and its impact on health. Though we are concerned about the water purification, many of us are not aware of the importance of maintaining pH scale in water.

What is pH level?

Water’s pH level determines how acidic it is and ranges from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is considered neutral. That “seven” number is considered neutral or balanced between acidic and alkaline. If water is below 7 on the pH scale, its acidic. If its higher than 7, its alkaline. Alkaline water has a higher pH level than regular drinking water. Because of this, some advocates of alkaline water believe it can neutralize the acid in your body.

Alkalinity is good to have in our drinking water because it keeps the water safe for us to
drink. The amount of Alkalinity that should be in our water is 20-200 mg/L for typical drinking water. Alkalinity is basically dissolved minerals in the water that help neutralize the water we drink.

If alkalinity is much less than total hardness it may signify elevated levels of chloride, nitrate or sulfate. Water with low levels of alkalinity (less than 150 mg/L) is more likely to be corrosive. Proponents say that it can neutralize acid in your bloodstream. However, research suggests that alkaline water is unlikely to significantly change blood pH. Some studies suggest that alkaline water might help slow bone loss.

Studies shows that alkaline water have benefits like :
  • Anti-aging properties (via liquid antioxidants that absorb more quickly into the human body)
  • Colon-cleansing properties.
  • Immune system support.
  • Hydration, skin health, and other detoxifying properties.
  • Weight loss.
  • Cancer resistance.
